This error happened while compiling gettext. I'm using the 2004.2 with smp-nofb kernel.

Hi,

the easy way out is to start at stage 3.

I have used both stage 1 and 3 for building a gentoo box.

not much of difference and besides. you eventually emerge all your packages from custimized specs as the time goes.

as far as the error - can't help you, sorry.

btw: if u really want the stage 1 build, then download an earlier gentoo livecd.

I REALLY want to do it from stage1 - just because it puts the machine through hell, and if my machine can't handle it, i'd rather not use it (that might indicate the machine wasn't stable).

Does 2004.2 have known problems? My main reason for using it was that my machine is a laptop and I need networking support. I think the previous gentoo had networking issues - but i'm not certain.

Also, i'm compiling with nptl. Shouldn't that be done from stage1?

thanks for your reply

I was following that guide and having a problem, but it may have something to do with my laptop. I'm getting the newest lxnay ISO and i'll see if that helps any.

I can't seem to disable console blanking =/
