PostPosted: Fri Oct 29, 2004 12:31 am    Post subject: usb mouse dies after gnome logout? Reply with quote

Hey all, if anyone can help me with this I'd be hugely appreciative.

The short version is that when my system boots up, the usbmouse is detected fine and works perfectly. When I log out of gnome, however, gdm takes me back to the login screen but the mouse has died. Unplugging it and replugging it in doesn't help. Restarting gdm/X doesn't help. Restarting hotplug doesn't help. Changing what usb port I use doesn't help. The only thing that brings it back is a reboot, something I never used to do. An exact clone of this setup worked fine on another board using similar hardware, so I'm mystified.

I'm running udev with vanilla kernel 2.6.7. p4 with i865 chipset on an abit is7, with an abit ati 9200se video card and 5 button MS intellimouse. Stock speed with good cooling. Here's the relevant output from /var/log/messages, as I don't know where else to look. If anyone has any ideas for other things I can look at, or suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

are you using gpm for your console?

Thanks,

No. It's installed, but not set to start in any of the runlevels. I seem to recall doing an /etc/init.d/gpm restart at a virtual console one time, in the hopes that it would fix the problem, but alas, it didn't work either.

Were you thinking gpm was the culprit, or would you hope that gpm would fix the problem? Frankly, I've never actually understood what gpm was useful for anyhow. Who uses a mouse at the console?

Well...
I use the mouse in the console quite a bit actually... great for copying text and the like. But appart from that I seem to remeber having a problem similar to your problem back in the day while using Slackware w/ Gnome (with a ps/2 mouse though). I set gpm up to start when my computer booted and seemed to do the trick.

I just put the following in my /etc/conf.d/local.start file
Code:

gpm -m /dev/input/mice -t imps2

replace imps2 with whatever your mouse happens to be (of course). Use man gpm for all of them to choose from.

Anyway, before adding that to your local.start. When your mouse goes dead switch to a console and type the above gpm command in (with your options) and switch back and see if your mouse is working.

Thanks,
Phil (SIR_Taco)

Maybe it'll fix your problems

hey -- thanks for the advice. I tried your suggestion, but running gpm didn't help, the mouse was still dead. I finally just found the usb->ps2 adapter that came with the mouse originally, and stuck the thing into the ps2 port. Now it works fine. There's still a huge mouse lag when I fire up quake3, but nothing that impacts any of my actual work.

There still seems to be a usb problem after logout of gdm, though, if there are devices still plugged in. I logged out with my notebook drive still plugged into the usb ports (possibly the best $95 I've spent on hardware, BTW), and when I went to shutdown as root, it spewed a few usb messages, and then stalled on shutdown. I can clearly work around this, but it's annoying that there are still issues.

thanks again for your advice -- I appreciate the time. I'll get all of the kinks worked out someday, but it doesn't have to be today, enough works that I'm still productive with the machine.

Just to follow up on this, I finally solved the problem by disabling the onboard Firewire, USB 2.0 ports, and sound. I stuck in a cheap-ish firewire/usb2 card from soho that works fine to replace it, and found an old sblive for the sound.

I guess I'm not too surprised that the onboard controllers were flaky, but it's a real pain in the butt -- I thought that intel chipsets were supposed to be bombproof! What I AM surprised at, though, is that the SATA seagate 7200.7 that was completely flaking out on me is now rock solid. Totally curious.

Frankly, I think I'm done with Abit boards. They've got an amazing reputation, but of the 5 I've had over the years, all have been unreliable in one way or another.
