the radeon drivers are basicly accellerated, but it seems the render acceleration is missing for the R3xx types of cards, so some parts may be slow ...

You could also just downgrade to Xorg 6.7 until new drivers appear.

Bit offtopic but.. I did read from r300.sourgeforge.net that they are working on some 'alternative' to fglrx drivers (no native 3d acceleration yet)..
I think that project will be merged to DRI and could be thus used with newest X.org...

That's hopefully what will happen eventually, but like you say, they're still some way from getting a full featured driver working.

There is no alternative. The only useful one you don't want to hear: buy a nvidia card.

I am considering it more and more lately (I have a 9600XT myself).

This is about your best option in the circumstances, I had a similar problem with the same Radeon 9600 card. Portage upgraded xorg to 6.8 before it emerged the latest ~x86 ati-drivers and then when I did another emerge -up world it wanted to downgrade Xorg back to 6.7! After doing this my 3D acceleration was working again with the ATi drivers.

You could try this:

http://r300.sourceforge.net/

Its early DRI support for the r300.

"Very early" would be more accurate. I haven't tried them for a while, but I don't think they're anywhere near ready for normal use yet (I'm not trying to put them down, I'd love an opensource driver for my 9800 Pro :))

ok seems there is no alternative except for downgrading xorg or buying an nvidia card. I have a few probs with the xorg radeon driver. Its quite slow and fonts keep stuffing up in firefox. If i open a site sometimes the fonts are small, and highlighting them brings them to the right size? can this be fixed?. or should i just stop being stubborn and downgrade to xorg 6.7 ?

Buying a nvidia card is not an alternative with a notebook :(
Please keep this in mind before you respond ...

I had the very same problem as you with the Firefox fonts which has been solved by going back to an older xorg, for the amount of time it will take to downgrade (an hour or so compiling overnight?) the benefit is worth it IMO.
