You didn't recently compile a new kernel and disabled or forgot to enable floppy support?

hmm, a program that throws out all /dev/fd stuff?
so you don't have /dev/fd1440 anymore too for example?

Do you use devfsd or udev? And what kernel version are you using?

Hmm I have the same problem........and I've had the same problem for quite some time now...since I compiled one of the 2.6.8 kerenls....hard to say which one though....don't use the floppy drive that often and didn't notice it right away.

Currently I'm using 2.6.9-gentoo-r1

Mounting /dev/fd0u1440 /floppy resolved the problem for me.

It used to be just /dev/fd0 for me, but obviously they changed that.

it didn't work

I changed my /etc/fstab to

/dev/fd0u1722 /mnt/floppy

I checked my /dev Dir and I found a fd0u1722 I did notice that
all my other Dev's are a sim link to another dir but this one didn't
maybe thats why It didn't work.
