I am sorry about yet another ATI post.. i've browsed the forums for weeks before posting this...

Hello. I have gentoo with the gentoo-dev 2.6.9 kernel i've tried to install the ati closed drivers without any luck in both xfree and xorg and i am now conviced that it is a problem with the x dri interface.

This is sort of my configuration:

1) My kernel is compiled without DRM support (just trying to follow some posts)
2) I have agppart support in kernel and is loading correctly
3) Ive emerged the ati-drivers and ati-drivers-extra
4) right now im running x.org 6.8
5) My opengl implementation is the ati one

Both under x.org and xfree my computer totally hangs ( cant even change console ) if i run glxinfo or glxgears or their ati counterparts. I figured out that if i remove the line from my xorg.conf it doesn't hang but then i don't have any 3d acceleration.

Code:
load "dri"

Some things to know:
1) The X.org log doesn't have a single error.
2) Tried with and without drm support in the kernel
3) Tried to suse the internal and external agppart ( configuration ati driver)

I really need some kind of hardware acceleration ( since im working with opengl at the university) and if you could post any solution or another configuration that would get me some it would be apretiated.

I am totally new to gentoo but a fervent linux user ( even if a sheltered one)

Thanks in advance.

Mask Xorg 6.8 and downgrade to 6.7. 6.8 has bugs which break the ati-drivers.

I tried but can't figure out what to do...

I know the package.mask cannot be the place to mask because it gets re-writen in every sync

Is there a user level conf file for this....

Thanxs again

Yes there is, it's /etc/portage/package.mask

You'll probably have to create both the dir and file but once you do, simply place the following in it:

Code:
>=x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.0

and then run emerge -u xorg-x11 to downgrade xorg.
