|

I've never used an IRC client except for mirc. I tried bitchx because it was the only irc client I know of on linux, and I didn't like it; first I tried to register a nick with nickserv and it blocked them for "flooding", then I couldn't figure out how to close the damn program! Is there a nice, easy to use GUI'd IRC client anybody'd like to let me know about? I'm not some kind of power user or DCC sharer anymore, I just want to be able to join channels and chat and do the normal IRC stuff. |

X-chat if you really need a GUI, but try irssi in your terminal. Irssi is the best! _________________ Don't mess with the Penguin. |

Try Gaim, it has a simple IRC client built into it.
I'm not an expert, the reason I recommend Gaim is because I already use it to send instant messages on MSN and ICQ.
One day I wanted to visit an IRC channel for some information, so I simply added an IRC account in Gaim.
It worked right away. |

I also say irssi. Go with XChat if you want a GTK2-based GUI client though. |

irssi, all you ever need... powerful, small, non-buggy. _________________ "I do not fear computers. I fear lack of them." - Isaac Asimov |

I just emerged xchat and have been using it for a couple minutes. It is exactly what I was looking for. I'll probably look into using gaim also. I didn't know it had that capability in it.
Thanks for the suggestions everybody! |

If you didn't like BitchX, you might not like Irssi. It's another text IRC client. I didn't like BitchX or Irssi at first, but learned to love it. You just have to be patient and read the very good documentation on http://irssi.org (it's way better than BitchX docs for sure).
Xchat is nice in that it has a very smooth GUI and lots of options are accessible through menus. Irssi is nice because it uses less resources and can be made to look very pretty with themes. _________________ Folding@home -Join the Linux team (163)! |

Last I tried, Gaim's IRC wasn't stable enough for more than random use. I think they reworked the protocol plugin recently, but for the user interface I'd still prefer XChat. Of course now that Xchat has as anal licensing tricks as mIrc, I wouldn't recommend it anymore, so perhaps gaim is the way to go nowadays. It just might be a bit problematic because it's so obvious from UI that it's built on top of IM program, and not any conventional IRC client. |
