| I've been trying to install Gentoo for 4day now and have been running into some tedious problems. Luckily I have a laptop that I can read the installation guide, but it doesn't seem to help. Something always goes haywire. I went from installing on my laptop to installing it on my desktop now. Could never get the laptop install right. I'v followed the guide step by step and have commited my vacation to learning Gentoo(linux). I do have an internet connection and a Universal CD that boot. I have created my partitions just as the guide says, and also mounted them and created dir. When I go to download the stage for my arch, I get permission denied. also when I tried to set passwd for root and adduser everything works but i cannot log in as a user? Help please! |

Ok the "Permission Denied", is this when you are on the web page to download the file or is this when you try to extract it? If it is on the site then you may want to simply try another mirror.

Sorry but this is way to vauge to answer, can you give some more details? The error message you get would be nice...

1. Where do u get permission denied? FTP/local FS?
1.1 If local FS: (i think u save into an incorrect dir (read-only))
Mount ur disk partitions. mkdir /mnt/gentoo/root.
Use links2 or wget to download stages to /mnt/gentoo/root (but i think u have some on ur universal CD, try default x86 stage1). cd /mnt/gentoo && tar xvpjf ...
2. u should set passwd for user before logging in as a user:

mkdir /home/rob and chown && chgrp it.

okay, now its installing the stage from my cd, I know it takes a while,
man... the info I've gotten over the past for days has been alot.

stage3/stage1, practically no difference. Anyway, u r going to update old packages in stages. |
