Hi all,
I need access to certain files while at work, from multiple different computers on which I have no administrative rights, all of which have disabled USB ports (so I can't acces my USB flash drive).
My thinking was that I could set up a simple ftp server on my Gentoo system at home and access them from a bowser/other ftp client to do the trick.
I chose vsftpd because I want a simple ftp server and it seems to have a good reputation for stability and security.
I am looking for a simple step-through to get the vsftpd running on Gentoo. I think I have it going after a bunch of frustration, but I cannot be sure that I have done everything correctly and would still appreciate a complete step through (including, if necessary, xinetd configuration tips as this was installed along with vsftpd during the emerge process). Here's the output of netstat -a regarding active connections.
Code: | Active Internet connections (servers and established)
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State
tcp 0 0 *:www *:* LISTEN
tcp 0 0 *:ftp *:* LISTEN
tcp 0 0 *:ssh *:* LISTEN
tcp 0 0 *:https *:* LISTEN
tcp 0 284 192.168.1.105:ssh 192.168.1.1:1759 ESTABLISHED
udp 0 0 *:bootpc *:*

Although it looks like the ftp server is going, here's the output of /var/log/everything/current when I try to connect from another computer on my lan using either a browser or Windows ftp client:
Code: | Nov 2 22:38:27 [xinetd] START: ftp pid=16352 from=192.168.1.101
Nov 2 22:38:27 [xinetd] FAIL: ftp address from=192.168.1.101
Nov 2 22:38:27 [xinetd] EXIT: ftp pid=16352 duration=0(sec)
|
I did disable anonymous login. The server doesn't even allow me to try logging in, however. Do I need to adjust a config file or adjust the xinetd.conf or something else?
Finally, once these problems are resolved and this is working, I would much prefer logging in securely (at least, if not transferring files securely)
via ftp.
ANY tips or assistance would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Have a look at this topic. It seems that we're in similar problems. |

Ok, thanks for the tip. I edited the xinetd.conf and commented out the "only from" entry. Now I can establish a connection, but am unable to login. Any tips there?
here is my vsftpd.conf file
