dial up cnxn help

unfortunately, i'm stuck for several months with a dialup connection.

the instructions that the dialup provides are at the following site:
http://www.cit.cornell.edu/ezremote/windowsXP/#dial-up

I tried using wvdial with the settings of username, password, and dial number provided.

unfortunately, the connection doesn't happen. wvdial dials, then says that 'couldn't communicate with host.. hoping for the best...'
and the connection isn't established.

i'm hoping people here who used dial up back in the day will illuminate me on a setting i'm missing.

(from the help page linked above, the only setting i haven't set up analogously in wvdial is this:

10. Click the DNS tab and select Append these DNS suffixes (in order), and click Add.
1. Enter cit.cornell.edu, and click Add.

could this have something to do with it?)
