Hi everyone,
I have got got a gentoo box and am trying to install starcraft on it.
It gets all the way to the end of the install when the install breaks and I get an error.
Code:

Error:
Unable to create a link to c:\Program Files\Starcraft\Starcraft.exe as c:\windows\Start Menu\Programs\Starcraft\Starcraft.lnk.
Installation aborted.
Error 5: Access denied
at: LinkUndo.cpp line 165

I tried changing the permissions of the folder thinking that would be it, but it wasnt. I have googled it and found a couple of posts on something close to this, but not quite. After the error is escaped all files are deleted and since the registry entries are created after the links are made it will not let me play the game if I halt the install.

if it helps here is my wine config.

Code:

WINE REGISTRY Version 2
;; All keys relative to \\Machine\\Software\\Wine\\Wine\\Config

;; If you think it is necessary to show others your complete config for a
;; bug report, filter out empty lines and comments with
;; grep -v "^;" ~/.wine/config | grep '.'
;;
;; MS-DOS drives configuration
;;
;; Each section has the following format:
;; [Drive X]
;; "Path"="xxx"       (Unix path for drive root)
;; "Type"="xxx"       (supported types are 'floppy', 'hd', 'cdrom' and 'network')
;; "Label"="xxx"      (drive label, at most 11 characters)
;; "Serial"="xxx"     (serial number, 8 characters hexadecimal number)
;; "Filesystem"="xxx" (supported types are 'msdos'/'dos'/'fat', 'win95'/'vfat', 'unix')
;;   This is the FS Wine is supposed to emulate on a certain
;;   directory structure.
;;   Recommended:
;;   - "win95" for ext2fs, VFAT and FAT32
;;   - "msdos" for FAT16 (ugly, upgrading to VFAT driver strongly recommended)
;;   DON'T use "unix" unless you intend to port programs using Winelib !
;; "Device"="/dev/xx" (only if you want to allow raw device access)

It is a gentoo only box. Any help would be much appreciated as a couple of my friends have been able to install starcraft fine w/o any problems and all I want to do is play the game.

Thanks,
nate

How important is it for you to have this link

Code:

Unable to create a link to c:\Program Files\Starcraft\Starcraft.exe as c:\windows\Start Menu\Programs\Starcraft\Starcraft.lnk.
?

Did you check wether it was installed? I guess it is but it fails to alter you start menu. That isn't a problem is it?

No as soon as the installer recieves that error the install will halt and delete everything that has been transferred to the hard drive.

I keep running into this exact problem as well. I googled it, and no-one seems to know a work-around.

How is everyone else getting SC installed? Are we the only ones running into this error?

You're not the only ones. There are two ways around it. One: hit control+c when you hit this error in the console. This way, the installer doesn't delete the files. Or you can fetch WINE's CVS. I don't seem to have this problem w/ cvs right now.

I got the same error, but my installer did not abort. You might try to create a empty file at "c:\windows\Start Menu\Programs\Starcraft\Starcraft.lnk"

This might fool the installer?

I had another problem, where the reg db keys for the "Program Files", "Start Menu" and so on where missing, so the windows installer would fail because it could not find the directories, you might have a similar problem?

So what did you to fix the problem with the start menu registry keys not being created? I seem to be having precisely that problem.
