I installed Gentoo probably two or three weeks ago, and during the installation I hit an error, which I fixed, but only temporarily...
The kernel would hit a panic as it couldn't find root partition. I tried for some time to find the error (ie, in software), till I went into BIOS and turned off Parallel ATA. The kernel now boots no problem, but the DVD writer I have is now no longer recognised (by either Windows or Linux)...

Has anyone had similar problems? I can only run Linux with PATA off, and for some reason that knocks out my DVD... *sigh*

Maybe I missed an option in the kernel? I have 2.6.9-gentoo-r1 atm...

Advance thanks!

Extintor, I don't understand what you mean by boot order? It boots from my hd, to GRUB and then it autoselects Linux from there... And the thing is, with Parallel ATA off, not even the BIOS gives me an option to boot from CD/DVD (ie, I have to turn on PATA to boot Gentoo Live CD and turn it off as I reboot my normal kernel)

The thing is, without Parallel ATA on, both Windows and Linux boots but neither can find the DVD drive. Then, if it is on, Windows boots and can find the DVD drive, but Linux hits a kernel panic while booting..

Edit - Thinking about it, I installed SUSE while I was waiting for the Gentoo LiveCD to download (56k), and it booted fine... So, does anyone know what options I'd need to select to get PATA (Parallel ATA) support, or similar things using make config or make xconfig... I can't see any PATA options, only SATA and ATA...
