Hi,
I've got the following problem. I'm using fvwm as windowmanager and my goal is to make it possible for anybody without knowledge of linux for that person to do everything with clicking. Yet there are some things i can only do as root-user. For example k3b only finds the cdrw-device if i'm root. (Using kernel 2.6.8.1)
The next thing is the network. Since i have to pcs but no router I'm not always connected to the modem when i boot, so i don't have eth0 added to default runlevel. My modem distributes IPs to the computers! Then i need to start eth0 afterwards.
If i want to go online i need to start that.
For all those actions i need to be root user. My question is now:
Is it possible to save the root-password in an external file and read this file. Something like this:
sux "read password-file" k3b or
su "read password" /etc/init.d/net.eth0 start
Hope someone can help me.

There are ways to get su to read from a file, but I would advise against it. You might want to check out sudo, it'll let your normal user execute stuff like root, but without the need to have your root password floating out there |
