What ssl library should i use for an open source ids?

I'm developing an Agent Oriented IDS, and i'm kinda new to the programming of this kind of software in c++

What do you recommend me to use for secure communication between the main module of the IDS and the agents?

I think the obvious choice is OpenSSL but i dont know where to find a good tutorial (c++) or if there's another solution for ssl.

Please give me your opinion...
