I noticed this problem while trying to set up Postfix (only needs to send mail, but all mail gets left in the queue with a complaint that the relevant MX record can't be found - this happens with all hosts) - even
Code:
dig -t MX hotmail.com
fails to find a record.

A records show up fine, so the basic DNS is obviously working. Why wouldn't MX records be coming through?

Perhaps you should test it using a different dns server. You can test this using dig with the @server syntax.
