I have an AMD64 with a ASUS V9180 GeForce4 MX440 graphic card.

Now I have successfuly set up gentoo, emerged gnome and wanted to enter it with startx. But my monitor just complains that there is a "bad input signal" and nothing shows on the screen until I kill X again.

So my question is: how can I install a working driver for that card?

it is supported by the nv driver in xorg it might be that the config files is trying to drive the monitor too hard.

try running
Code:
X -configure
and see if that config file works
