I've been attempting an install of Gentoo on my 2.4ghz box, and have noticed 3 distinct Gentoo install instructions.

First, /mnt/cd/docs/html/index.html is one,
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml is another one,
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-x86-quickinstall.xml is another.

Is one better than another? I've found each one is fundametaly unique.

Help a noob day?
Justin

Hi there,
As I understatnd it, the first you mention is on your cd and therefore not necesarily as upto date as the next two listed. It is useful if for any reason you cant get a net connection initially and just install from cd's.
The 2nd mentioned is the recommended way for people new to installing Gentoo and is pretty much a comprehensive guide to installing.
The last mentioned is as it says a quick install guide, it's aimed at those that have previously installed Gentoo before (or are experienced Linux SA's that are feeling lucky  )

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml is probably the best since it's the most up to date and explains why you're doing everything (as opposed to the quickinstall guide).

EDIT: too slow

Thanks I think I'll hunker down and try it again this weekend .. The last attempt ended up with a GRUB_ after reboot .. nothing more, nothing less. I hated to re-install my reliable distro because I had let Gentoo compile it's brains out for a few days.

I also have probably made life harder on myself than I needed too installing stage 2 instead of the seemingly more simple stage 3 (I'd install stage 1 if I thought I'd live through it).

Cheers all and "poof*

ohhh why are people afraid of the stage 1 install. It just takes more time (much more) and 3 extras CLI commands.

Your explanation answers the question. TIME. If you have an older computer a stage 1 will take FOREVER. And if you don't you may just want your computer up and running quickly.

Plus you can get the same effect as a stage 1 install by doing a stage 3, getting up and running, and then later doing "emerge -e world"

Agreed! While it doesn't take quiet forever, my Pentium MMX 233 takes the better part of a week doing a stage 1 install or no more than an hour doing a stage 3.

Of course, if I were smart, I'd have just add --buildpkg when I was emerging all the programs so that I could significantly speed up my install process if I ever want to reinstall again.

The quick install reference is really nice if you already have installed a bunch of gentoo systems. Just as a checklist to avoid forgetting something.

If you are quite new to gentoo take the handbook.

why reinstall?!? gentoo is one of the distributions that once installed you never have to reinstall for no matter what reason, it's like fire and forget!!! (do a back-up for heavens sake!!!)

The only machine that I frequently reinstall is because I use it as a test machine of sorts. On my other boxes, unless I do something horribly wrong (like typing "rm -dfr /usr" instead of "rm -dfr ~/usr" when trying to remove a /usr directory that got created in my /root directory), I don't reinstall, I fix. :)

That may have been a bit of an exaggeration. I believe it took 3 or 4 days total to get to a prompt.

But think of how long it would take to emerge something like gnome or kde.

On my old P3-450MHZ I started emerging kde on a Friday while I was away at school. I left for home for weekend. When I got back it was still emerging.

well, using resourse heavy programs/environments on such an old machine is just silly. Hell, KDE and Gnome feel sluggish on my 2Ghz machine. Respect the age of the machine and run a lighter windowmanager for heaven's sake!

Of course I only did that when I first had gentoo; at the time I had no idea it would take so long. I wouldn't do it again on that box even if I still had it.

Most of the reason I "reinstall" is the noob in me. If I knew how to fix what I borked, I'd probably reinstall a lot less.

I got Gentoo to the login WOOHOO . kdebase is emerging now (has been for a while) .. Gotta go find out how to get x, network etc fired up on boot after that's done ..

I've got a little 450mhz box I use as my web host, ftp server, masquerade box that I'm hot to stick gentoo on. It'll be a while it looks like, but I really like having all my stuff compiled for the machine it's one.

Cheers all,
Justin
