I have an A7N8X-E Delux motherboard, with the nForce 2 chipset and an Athalon XP 2500+.

I got Gentoo installed, and to my surprise it booted successfully on the first attempt without any additional tinkering.

There was one problem, however, which was that my network wasn't working. I consulted some of my friends on the LittleBlackDog fourms, asking them why it was giving me crap that "netmount" wasn't started, and as far as I can tell it's simply because it couldn't start eth0 to begin with. Oh yes, you can find that thread here.

Now I think I know why this is, and it's because I never emerged nvnet or nforce-net. I would have, but I can't. I try typing "emerge nforce-net" and "emerge nvnet", but both return the error "no ebuilds to satisfy ....". So I'm starting to think that the copy of Portage I downloaded from one of the Gentoo mirrors is screwed up, as a previous time I installed gentoo "emerge nforce-net" worked fine without any configuration or anything.

So, what do you guys think is going on?

You do not need to emerge anything else to get your networking to work. I have the same board and did not have to anyways. The two modules you need to build are forcedeth (for the 10/100 mb nic) and sk98lin (for the 1000 mb nic).

I don't recall exactly where they are but in Device Drivers > Networking > 10/100, the one you need will be Reverse Engineered nForce something. Sorry, I really don't recall the exact name of it. Hopefully someone here can give you the exact name but it's the only one there that says "reverse engineered".

For the gigabit connection, you need to include the marvel/yukon driver.

All I need to get to work (at least at this point) is the 10/100 NIC. The gigabit one, at least for now, is not being used. There really wouldn't be much point, as it would be faster than all the other NICs in the house...

Well I found this about how to go from nforce-net to forcedeth so just follow the part about installing the forcedeth driver and youll be all set.

Thanks very much kafeen.

I have an A7N8X-E Deluxe, and I fought this same issue for several hours (my first linux install). Your information was exactly what I needed.

I will next be enabling my onboard Gb card since I know exactly what driver to compile for it.

Now if I can only get X to install and run with my Radeon 9700.....
