|
|
Hi again,
I'm using a Toshiba Satellite 2410. What happens is that the keyboard will suddenly stop responsing to input. All other devices keep on running fine, but the keyboard is dead
Works OK on kernel 2.6.3, but tested on 2.6.5, 2.6.6 and 2.6.7 [various sub versions, vanilla-sources and gentoo-dev-sources] with the fault occuring on all three.
I've posted on this issue in the past, but no-one has been able to help so far
Anyways, I got fed up with it and reformatted and reinstalled from 2004.1. Previously I was running X.org with KDE 3.2.2, this time I'm running X.org with Gnome 2.6. This issue is still here despite the rebuilt. I've only been in work two hours, and I've had to reboot twice so far to get the keyboard back - Windows has far better uptime on this machine
No messages whatsoever around the time are reported in the syslog.
Unfortunately, due to the nature of my day to day work, I can't run in console-only/single-user mode long enough to gaurantee replication of the fault.
When I initially built the system, I built it with stable packages. The issue kept reoccurring, so I decided to go completely bleeding edge - unstable. Issue still occurs.
I want to use >2.6.3 because they have better support for my laptop modem, which unfortunately I do have to use very regularly. I've been lucky so far in that when I've needed it I've been able to use the missus' XP laptop or my XDA-2 to get around it.
I'm getting the general impression that this machine may well be better off running XP instead of Linux _________________ SB

Just had a thought.... perhaps Xkb is responsible. So that's gone now, replaced by a custom xmodmap (for some reason £ doesn't work in Gnome Terminal )
Shall have to wait and see now!! _________________ SB

Yes, try attaching external PS/2 or USB keyboard. And, post a bug report to the kernel developers. _________________ 60s: sex, drugs, rock'n'roll

The laptop doesn't have a PS/2 port, and I don't have a USB keyboard. Whilst the external USB keyboard may well fix the problem, as a field engineer an external keyboard is not a possibility for use other than testing _________________ SB

Checked the kernel bug reports - someone else reported a problem along very similar lines with 2.6.0, however nothing ever came of it.
Unfortunately I can't carry on like this, so I'm returning this machine to XP pro... _________________ SB

I've the same problem on my Toshiba Satellite Pro 2100 notebook. The keyboard only works properly with kernel 2.4 but not with kernel 2.6.*
I tried all kernel versions up to 2.6.7 but with no success. The phenomenon is completely independent from any GUI or running program. |

Then you don't have to use windoze. Linux with latest 2.4 kernel is better _________________ 60s: sex, drugs, rock'n'roll

I know, but this doesn't solve the Problem with the Kernel 2.6 and I want to use the new kernel ...
I put a bug report on kernel.org - possibly this bug will be fixed sometimes ... |

After some googling, I found this:
Quote: | There are some issues with the touchpad: the keyboard will hang or delay when you press keys right after using the touchscreen. Follow the instructions on http://www.marcsaric.de/m30_linux1.html (search for "psmouse-base") to fix it. |
and:
Quote: |
Of the three, 2.6.3 seems the least affected - although I do get occasional keyboard lockups, if I use the mouse for a few seconds the keyboard becomes re-enabled. On both the 2.6.5 and 2.6.6 kernels a keyboard lockup seems permanent, although I haven't tried leaving it for more than a minute or two. |
and:
Quote: | I just reinstalled Gentoo this week and the problem appeared! With kernel 2.6.5- I didn't had this problem. I now have it with 2.6.6 and 2.6.7. I'm using a Toshiba Satellite A20 (Canadian version). |

This is a big bump, but I just wanted to say that you're not going crazy. I have the same problem on my Toshiba Satellite A25-S207. Did you happen to ever come up with a solution?

It seems that the problem is solved. I have actually no trouble with kernel 2.6.8-r3. |

I have a Toshiba Satelite 2540-S101 and I also have the same problem although not so frequently.
Ocasionally the keyboard gets stuck and I have to reboot.
But this only started AFTER the upgrade from 2.6.5 to 2.6.7.
On the other hand I do have another problem with key bouncing: quite frequently, when I type to fast the keyboard will repeat a certain key 20 times, like: tttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt, and then I have to clean it up... it really sucks... but I dont think it is related to the your problem because I also had it in a 2.4 kernel long ago, on another distro, before moving to Gentoo. _________________ "Nobody is perfect. Ok, everyone with Toshibas and Synaptics touchpads working in native mode (i.e. without specifying psmouse.proto=bare or psmouse.proto=imps) - try passing "psmouse.rate=40" as a boot option (or do modprobe psmouse rate=40 if psmouse is build as a module).
If that helps with keyboard getting stuck when touching the pad please send the output of dmidecode utility to dtor_core@ameritech.net
Thanks! _________________ Dmitry |
