help :'(
On my comp i had to do a fsck.reiserfs --rebuild-tree. It errored the first time, and i finally got it finished. Scared that my files would all me gone i rebooted. Luckally, gentoo started without any complaints. When i tried to startx I got a quick black flash and an error saying
Code: | (EE) Failed to load module "glx" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (module does not exist, 0)
|
I have tried reemerging nvidia-kernel, nvidia-glx and xorg-x11. Still nothing is working. Does anyone know something i could do to fix it? |

A temporary workaround would be to change the Driver "nvidia" line in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf to Driver "nv", as well as commenting out the Load "glx" line. Possibly what happened is your kernel got borked. Tried recompiling that? _________________ "Subtraction: Addition's tricky pal." --David Letterman

Try this.
Code: | # rm -fr /lib/modules/ |
Recompile kernel. Recompile both nvidia packages. Also recompile any other package that installs drivers into /lib/modules. You probably won't need to recompile xorg.
You might have corrupt drivers manifested from your hard drive issue. |

Wouldn't Code: | rm -rf /lib/modules/(uname -r) | be a bit more safe? Rather than delete the modules of every kernel that he has, just the one he's using. _________________ "Subtraction: Addition's tricky pal." --David Letterman

Nothing. I recompiled my kernel and removed the /lib/modules/ and recompiled again. I then reemerged nvidia and xorg-x11 again, but still no luck. |

modprobe nvidia didn't give error?
Did you check if you are using nvidia-kernel & GLX 1.0.6111? |

I forgot to mention i am on amd64. I am using the latest drivers for Nvidia (6111) and even tried their new ones not in portage yet. Im thinking maybe there is a symlink or something missing. Where are the Xorg modules stored so i can manually check to see if they are there. also what known symlinks go to this file. |

Well i tried two more things. I erased my /etc/X11 and my /usr/X11R6 file and then reemerged xorg-x11. Still same thing. I can run it with the nv driver and no glx, but that wont work for me due to my need for gaming. Is there any alternitive other than a complete reinstall? |

well, if no one has any ideas by tommarow then i fear im gonna have to do a complete reinstall. Before that though, is there anyway to completely remove xorg-x11, when i just do emerge -C xorg-x11 it leaves behind quite a few files still having to do with it. It also comes up with a message at the start of the emerge saying that it sees that xorg has already been installed once. It then continues to compile, but i believe that it isnt actually replacing everything. Any ideas?! |

i had this same problem, i fixed it simply by emerging nvidia-glx (it wasnt installed before, wasn't aware it was required for non accelerated graphics), seems to work fine with it installed, perhaps it just needs remerging in this situation. _________________ This post was skilfully delivered by Charlie Smurthwaite |
