Is there a reason why I shouldn't compile everything with ipv6 support that has the flag? Or for that matter should I bother?

I am confused about it. I read it is backwards compatible, if that is true I see now reason why most people aren't switching or have switched already.

It is backwards compatible, however people (in general) have this wonderful ability to put off things until they absolutely have to do them. It is this effect that is preventing the widespread adoption of IPV6.

For example, I could (I haven't, by the way) enable IPV6 and do all the configuration and get everything to work with IPV6 or IPV4 because my ISP doesn't support IPV6 because they don't have to - yet. Once they do support it I'll be sure to switch everything over to IPV6, but until then it would just be extra work on my part for no benefit whatsoever, to myself or to the general adoption of IPV6 because it'll all be IPV4 beyond my home network.

Just my thoughts, they're zealots on both sides of the issue, i tend to lean towards the people advocating adoption, but then again I don't run a thousand or more node network, so the upgrade wouldn't be as painful for me.

is it true that to for IPV6 support all you need is some DNS that supports it? So even if your ISP doesn't support it you could just use another DNS?

I don't believe so, I was under the impression DNS over IPV6 was translated down to IPV4, then resolved, then sent back. Though that was back when I last did some research on the topic, bind8 was the most recent release of bind back then, so things very well could have changed by now.

Nonetheless, simply having a DNS server that supports IPV6 wont let you 'use' all of IPV6 natively, you're traffic will still have to be put into IPV6 over IPV4 for getting the the DNS server and such - not to mention all of your communications with non-IPV6 enabled clients, and of course if ever in any routing your IPV6 packet has to get through an IPV4 node it'll have to be encapsulated then as well.
