Emerge wants gcc 4.3

Seems like a typo. There is no gcc-4.3, newest is 3.4.x
You should try and correct the ebuild yourself, and/or file a bugreport - but don't forget to tell the version of alsautils you were trying to emerge. You can find that out by using 'emerge -upv alsautils'.
