Is it possible to install Oracle 8 on a newer Gentoo release?
Does anyone have experience with such an installation?
The company I work for does not want to pay for a newer version of Oracle (does anybody?) and is unable to use a different db due to contractural obligations.
I'm trying to find a way to get it installed without having to download something like RedHat 6 - I'd much rather work on a newer platform. _________________ Talk is cheap because supply always exceeds demand. |

I tried hard these days to get 8i running on 2004.2 -- to no avail.
As far as I can see it has something to do with gcc/glibc versions. I then tried 9i but not even the so called Universal Installer would run correctly and my little try with 10g quit with some error message that you need SuSE, RedHat or TurboLinux. No way to hack around this as the installer now is some binary and no shell script.
If you have any success to report I'd be glad if you shared it with me.

at least i was able to install 9i some time ago. there is an excellent resource for that one out there to get around the several issues and problems. i dont know about version 8 but i gues it can be installed with a little hassle aswell.

as for 10g. correct that the installer does not support gentoo, but a strace reveals that it checks for some version files in /etc. its not a real problem to create one of these files to pass the check. |

You have to run the installer like this:
Code: |
./runInstaller -ignoreSysPrereqs
|
There's more to it, like some user/group creation etc...

Is this site merely useful or have you succeeded in installing 8.1.7 under Gentoo?
Don't get me wrong: Though I have 10g running now I'm still interested in 8i and 9i as my company still uses these versions under Solaris and Debian Woody -- but I'd rather have them running under Gentoo...

I'm not certain, however I'm sure it could be adapted in some way.
I don't have the time to test, but maybe you'd like to? It's mostly about getting compatability RPM's installed and fixing some scripts. _________________ Talk is cheap because supply always exceeds demand. |

Hmmm,
I've looked at a number of similar sites all according to rpm based distros and I always came to some point where it would not go any further
As I mentioned before, there is some issue with gcc/glibc version which can only be solved when you have compatibility libs that aren't available under Gentoo.
I've come to a point where I find it would be the easiest way to put a working Debian system into a chroot under Gentoo...
