I'm trying to get a badass amd64 gentoo machine working; but there are all of these damn masked packages! I mean, it's all well and good to try to protect me from possibly bad packages, but I need to get something, right? In any case, I want to emerge xfree but it tells me that the package has been masked because of "missing keyword." I read the "MASKED PACKAGES" section in the manual but I didn't find anything.
Can anyone tell me how to get around this masking, and in general how to bypass package masking?
Thanks

Read the sticky on the AMD64 forums regarding this. Short answer: Xfree isn't supported on AMD64 any more. |

What??
Why would they _remove_ support for xfree? I could see it being in progress, but why would they specifically stop supporting xfree?
What are poor people like me meant to do for a GUI environment, then? |
