At least the stuff in /var/tmp/portage/ is save to delete. It's only used during compilation of new packages. |

thanks!!!
my /var now is only 7% used.
*PHEW* didnt realize the /var/tmp/portage directory would eat up so much space. |

It shouldn't.
Once an emerge compleates it cleans up and leaves only afew bytes in /var/tmp/protage.
Unless you have a few faild emerges, they tend to leave an awful lot behind.
There is a script somewhere that cleans the /tmp directory on start-up. Maybe you could add a line to that to clean up /var/tmp as well? _________________ My Public Key

Where can I find the script? anyone know?
Also, you mentioned the /tmp directory. My /tmp dir contains a lot of folders and files. Is it safe to delete them too?
Another qn, my /var/tmp contains directories:
emerge-webrsync
kdecache-banzai
kdecache-root
portage (which Ive just 'cleaned')
and .keep file
Is it safe to delete them too? |

Look in /etc/init.d/bootmisc
I'd back it up before you make any changes though!
As for /tmp and /var/tmp
everything in there should be temporary files, I've done rm -rf /tmp/* many times and not had a problem.
It only takes one silly program to give you a problem though. I'd have that boot script clean them and leave it at that. Cleaning them while the system is running could cause problems (especially the kde ones if kde is running).
Make sure you keep the .keep files about. _________________ My Public Key
