How does your card have two PCI numbers? Are you on a laptop or desktop? AGP or PCI? If it is a desktop, does your motherboard have a built-in video card like mine does? Have you run an lspci?

Note the two entries for the ati card.
It does work with just the one entry. I'm just wondering if I'm missing something with the second one.
According to google, the second one is just a marker used by windows, and isn't real.

I'm going to re-do my kernel using some of your flags and see if it makes a difference.

Thanks for your help.

OK, I've tried everything I can think of and can't get above 380 fps.
I've found one thing which might be the cause of my grief.
my XOrg log shows
Code:

(II) RADEON(0): [drm] DRM interface version 1.2
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] created "radeon" driver at busid "pci:0000:01:05.0"
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] added 8192 byte SAREA at 0xe19f6000
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] mapped SAREA 0xe19f6000 to 0xb3ce7000
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] framebuffer handle = 0xf0000000
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] added 1 reserved context for kernel
(WW) RADEON(0): [agp] AGP not available
(EE) RADEON(0): [agp] AGP failed to initialize. Disabling the DRI.
(II) RADEON(0): [agp] You may want to make sure the agpgart kernel module
is loaded before the radeon kernel module.
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] removed 1 reserved context for kernel
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] unmapping 8192 bytes of SAREA 0xe19f6000 at 0xb3ce7000

For some reason it doesn't think that AGP is available. Yet I know from the dmesg that it is. (Build in, not a module).

I've also got a duel processor amd board which might be throwing things off as well.

Any ideas?[/code]

iplayfast - I'm pushed for time right now, but I'll answer your questions as detailed as possible. One thing though - go to http://www.gentoo-wiki.com and read some of the HOW-TO's for the ATI Driver's. Make sure /dev/agpgart is compiled into the kernel and not as a module (Device Drivers/Character Devices), the correct chip for your motherboard is compiled into the kernel (I have a Nforce2 motherboard, so I chose the NVIDIA nforce2 option, a few slots underneath the /dev/agpgart option), Direct Rendering Manager is selected, ATI Radeon is compiled into the kernel and NOT as a module, ATI Radeon Display Support and DDC/I2C for ATI Radeon support are both compiled into the kernel (Device Drivers/Graphics Support), Support for the framebuffer splash is marked, make sure Video mode selection support and Framebuffer Console support are the only two items checked in the Console display driver support area. I think these are all the important items. Oh yeah, and make sure you DO NOT mark anything inside the Logo configuration section.

Why don't you paste your config file to the forum, and I'll take a look through it? Also, if you could tell me your exact system setup, that might help too.

If push comes to shove, IM me, and maybe I can ssh into your box and see what's wrong. I'd like to think of this as a very last resort, but let's first see what system you got going on, and how your kernel config is set up.

Oh yeah, and what kernel version are you using, as well as what type? Like I said, I am using the 2.6.9-nitro2 kernel, and I highly recommend it. I have found that it is much faster than the other variations of the kernels out there.

Patrick

I don't know if this does anything or not, but I just recently added

I've recompiled and tested the kernel about 20 times since my last post. I'll post my latest config file tonight. I'll check out the wiki as well. Thanks for the link. (Wow took a quick look. I've been needing this link!)

I've noticed that when I compile the radeon as a module it is about 50 fps slower. Not the difference that I'm looking for. When I compile it into the kernel it's faster but I get a message in the XOrg log that it couldn't load the radeon driver. (weird).

It seems that the the dri is being disabled and that is the crux of the problem.
I'm not sure which version of kernel I'm using, but I think it's close to vanilla. I'll check out nitro as well. (What the heck I've got nothing to do beside compile kernels :)

Thanks for your help.

Here are my .config, my Xorg.0.log and my xorg.conf and my dmesg.

The important bits. dmesg says that
Code:

Linux agpgart interface v0.100 (c) Dave Jones
agpgart: Detected AMD 760MP chipset
agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 439M
agpgart: AGP aperture is 32M @ 0xfc000000
[drm] Initialized drm 1.0.0 20040925

So agpgart is there.

But Xorg.0.log says that
Code:

drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device)
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device)
drmOpenDevice: Open failed
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device)
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device)
drmOpenDevice: Open failed
[drm] failed to load kernel module "radeon"
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] drmOpen failed
(EE) RADEON(0): [dri] DRIScreenInit failed.  Disabling DRI.

The driver is built in the kernel.
Complete output follows:

my config.

PCI: Using ACPI for IRQ routing
** PCI interrupts are no longer routed automatically.  If this
** causes a device to stop working, it is probably because the
** driver failed to call pci_enable_device().  As a temporary
** workaround, the "pci=routeirq" argument restores the old
** behavior.  If this argument makes the device work again,
** please email the output of "lspci" to bjorn.helgaas@hp.com
** so I can fix the driver.

Updated my xorg last night and all of a sudden I was getting 900 fps on GLX Gears. I can now tweek things to approach the 1600 fps that Ranthog and others were getting.

All that work and it was a bug in Xorg.

You're right, all I did was edit a previous .ebuild and emerge it, and it did everything else. I'm still trying to get my ATI card to operate its best, but right now I get about 1200fps with glxgears and 44fps fullscreen glxgears with my ATI Radeon 9200. I'll do some more tweaking to see if I can get that higher.

Thanks for the response, and the help.

I've got radeon 9200 in my lapotp, using radeon driver with dri loaded and running and I get about 2000 glxgears normal and about 350 fps in fullscreen. Altough now the flash plugin crashes any browser :(

Ok messing around with your config managed to make x not run: fatal error no screen found...

Got it back running by emerging ati-drivers and ati-drivers-extra and using the old xorg.conf that i had backed up as xorg.conf.working (glad i did that).

Looking at my kernal i have basicly the same as you, except my kernel is 2.4

Tho, my radeon driver is not a module

Somet things i noticed, is this in my kernal and possably stopping it from working? Two things I noticed in your kernal's config
Code:
#
# Graphics support
#
CONFIG_FB=y
CONFIG_FB_MODE_HELPERS=y
CONFIG_FB_TILEBLITTING=y
# CONFIG_FB_CIRRUS is not set

and

Im thinking my problem is either A: Radeon is not a module or B: 2.4 kernal or C: an Id-10t error by me...

Right now my fps is around 116 with glxgears... [/code]

Ok i give up.. i compiled 2.6.9 kernel, loaded the radeon drivers as a module..

When I used your config (i did add my monitors hz ranges and supported resolutions) everything looks to load fine (well except a couple of fonts I do not have) except X wont load, here are the only errors in my log file:

Code:
(WW) RADEON: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:3:0:0) found
(WW) RADEON: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:3:0:1) found
(EE) No devices detected

Fatal server error:
no screens found

Just above this error I see an (II) for RADEON: Driver for ATI Radeon chipsets, with a list of a bunch of cards (including mine) there..

Radeon 9200 on a mb with nforce2 chipset on an old crappy IBM P50 monitor.

Im a noob so im lost atm.. reverting back to working setup again HEH

Okay I *HIGHLY* suggest using the built in kernel drivers and xorg 6.8 if you have the following cards:

R100 Radeon 7200
RV100 Radeon 7000(VE), M6
RS100 Radeon IGP320(M)
RV200 Radeon 7500, M7, FireGL 7800
RS200 Radeon IGP330(M)/IGP340(M)
RS250 Radeon Mobility 7000 IGP
R200 Radeon 8500, 9100, FireGL 8800/8700
RV250 Radeon 9000PRO/9000, M9
RS300 Radeon 9100 IGP
RS350 Radeon 9200 IGP
RV280 R300 Radeon 9700PRO/9700/9500PRO/9500/9600TX, FireGL X1/Z1 (2D only)
R350 Radeon 9800PRO/9800SE/9800, FireGL X2 (2D only)
R360 Radeon 9800XT (2d only)
RV350 Radeon 9600PRO/9600SE/9600, M10/M11, FireGL T2 (2D only)
RV360 Radeon 9600XT (2d only)
RV370 Radeon X300, M22 (2d only)
RV380 Radeon X600, M24 (2d only)
R420 Radeon X800 (2d only)
R423 Radeon X800 PCIE (2d only)
Radeon 9200PRO/9200/9200SE, M9+

Did you actually test all these?

The last time I tested the build in drivers didn't support 3D acceleration for 9600 and higher boards like my 9800 PRO. The ati-drivers do provide acceleration for these boards 3067 fps in glxgears on my 9800 PRO.

I've got a radeon 9200 se and right now I'm getting about as good results as with ati's drivers. (YES!) These cards use the series 300 chipsets which is stuff there is documentation for.

The 9600 series cards use a different chipset (and wasn't mentioned in your quote). So the 3d rendering on those cards probably won't work.

I figured it out.. im getting over 2000 fps now with a small box :D

Resizing the glxgears box or trying diffrent resolutions does the trick..

Followed the advice, upgraded to 6.8, unmerged the ati-drivers, compiled radeon driver into the kernel, changed the driver to "radeon" in my xorg.conf, did an opengl-update xorg-x11, and now it says I have no direct rendering, and glxgears hardlocks my machine.

Hmm....

Note the two entries for the ati card.
It does work with just the one entry. I'm just wondering if I'm missing something with the second one.
According to google, the second one is just a marker used by windows, and isn't real.

The second one is your secondary screen output, i.e. usually your TV-out.

By the way, did anyone have any luck compiling ATI's drivers with gcc 3.4.3 ? I get "unkown module format" when modprobe'ing them. Works fine when compiled with gcc 3.3...

I finally managed to be able to modprobe fglrx without errors.

But still, when starting X I get errors because of unresolved symbols from fglrx_drv.o - Gnome loads although.

But fglrxinfo hangs and doesn't return.

glxinfo is gone by now, don't know why.

What is the difference between XFree86 4.3.0 and X.org 6.7.0 ?

They will work both?!?

i've tried all the "option" tweaks in this thread and i'm stuck at 1300~ fps with a radeon 9600 (xp 2000+, 2.6.9 kernel, 3.4.whatever gcc, xorg 6.7.something)

everything seems to be working fine (loads modules, direct rendering shows up as on, etc) but it sounds like i should be getting better framerates.

glxgears isn't a proper benchmark. If you want to compare, use a real game like Q3A or UT2K4 or Doom3, they'll give much more useful results. Don't expect stellar performance from any card using the ATI binary driver though.

They will both work - 6.7 didn't include many changes from 4.3.0 AFAIK, and they're binary compatible, so the fglrx driver will work for both. The reason it doesn't work on 6.8 yet is because there was some binary incompatibility introduced by 6.8.

If glxinfo is gone, you should remerge xorg-x11 or xfree, whichever you're using.

which driver should i use? i was under the impression that ati-drivers would give the best performance.

You said in your last post you have a R9600, so you unfortunately don't have the option of using the "radeon" driver instead, since it doesn't support 3D accel on the newer cards. At the moment there isn't any other alternative to the ati-drivers, although it might be worth keeping an eye on the progress of this project: http://r300.sourceforge.net which is attempting to create an opensource driver for the newer ATI cards. It already works to some extent, but I doubt you could use it as a replacement for the ATI driver yet.

I'm pretty sure I remember one of the ATI driver developers stating that their focus is on features and stability for now, rather than on improving performance - it may well improve in the future, but I don't know when.

Damnit!

I finally managed to get 3D working.

fglrx doesn't claim about any unresolved symbols anymore, and when "startx" starts the X-Server, everything works flawlessly.

fgl_rxgears shows > 1000 fps. Wonderful.

BUT - and here comes the caveat:

It seems that all my kernel modules are gone.
ALSA claims about not finding snd-0, a manual "modprobe via82xx" doesn't work cause modprobe doesn't find ANY module.
Windows-Mounting also fails, cause VFAT and NTFS couldn't get loaded, modprobe fat, etc. also fails.

lsmod shows that the only module that gets loaded is the mentioned fglrx.
However, my /etc/modules.autoload has all important modules in it (fat, acpi, etc.).
Dependencies in modules.dep only shows "fglrx" again.

What am I supposed to do best next?

I don't want to scramble my 3D for example which ate 3 days of mine.

I'm happy to get 3D finally to work, but I want sound and windows-mounts again... :(

Help is very appreciated.

What did you do to get your 3D accel working that might have affected the other kernel modules? Are the modules actually still where they should be (under /lib/modules/<kernel version>)? If not, cd to /usr/src/linux and run "make modules_install" - that should copy them back to the right places.

djkronos, thank you very much for your helps in this thread. Thanks to them I got migrating from XFree 4.3 with fglrx to Xorg with radeon at the very first strike! (well, xorg 6.8.0 seems to not take care about XF86Config-4 so I had to rename it)

The 2D side seems ways off better than the old Xfree/fglrx one!! it rocks! much more clear and responsive!
on the 3D side, I ganed about 600fps in glxgears BUT I tryed Neverwinter Nights and it seems to me a little slower..more glitching, I mean.
What's your experience with 3D games?
