Rieccomi... sembra che in questi primi giorni di gentoo non riesca a modificare qualcosa senza distruggere nel contempo metà del sistema...
Tutto d'un tratto non mi parte più X server: lanciando startx parte solo una schermata nera e tornando sulla console trovo questo messaggio

Se riprovo a dare startx mi si pianta il pc e devo riavviare.
Non ho modificato /etc/X11/xorg.conf e non ho niente in .xinitrc (prima conteneva exec blackbox ma ho provato a togliere il comando per vedere se fosse quello il problema...). L'ultima cosa che ho fatto prima che spuntasse il problema mi pare sia stata ricompilare il kernel per aggiungere ACPI, quindi non capisco proprio cosa c'entri con X...

Comunque una prova con il vecchio kernel oppure disabilitando acpi disabilitato la farei...
