i am having a slightly different problem and it appears to be caused by the USE variable hal (if i don't activate hal i don't get the error). i get the same error if i emerge hal on its own
emerge -av hal

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[blocks B ] sys-kernel/linux-headers (from pkg sys-kernel/linux26-headers-2.6.8.1)
[ebuild N ] dev-python/pyrex-0.9.2.1 170 kB
[ebuild N ] sys-apps/dbus-0.22-r1 +X -debug +gtk +python +xml2 1,219 kB
[ebuild N ] sys-fs/udev-043 372 kB
[ebuild N ] sys-kernel/linux-headers-2.4.21-r1 -build 27,864 kB
[ebuild N ] sys-libs/libcap-1.10-r4 -debug -pic +python -static 38 kB
[ebuild N ] sys-kernel/linux26-headers-2.6.8.1 -build 34,793 kB
[ebuild N ] sys-apps/hal-0.2.98-r1 -debug 1,193 kB

Total size of downloads: 65,652 kB

!!! Error: The above package list contains packages which cannot be installed
!!! on the same system.

for some reason it wants to emerge both linux-headers and linux26-headers.

any ideas?

I did a 2nd emerge sync to solve the problem in the first post... I also have the B with that sys-kernel/linux-headers, but it also shows up a 2nd time for me with an N. Not sure what this means, but I haven't tried to emerge gnome yet.

Edit:
On another note, is there anything I should be aware of BEFORE I emerge gnome? Like specific USE flags? Kernel options? Anything?

for the blockage, try unemerging both and then emerging linux26-headers. if you don't have a 2.6 kernel then i'm not too sure on that though. i think the 2.6 headers are needed for the hal/dbus stuff but i could easily be wrong.

for prep, add hal and eds to your keywords. check out this thread: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=230019&highlight=preparing+gnome
