PostPosted: Thu Nov 11, 2004 7:57 am    Post subject: Unable to login as user. Reply with quote

So, I've completed my install and everything is up 'n running, except I can't login as any of the users I've added, only root. Neither from pty, ssh nor xdm. I need some help where to start fail-checking, as I have almost no clue myself. So far I've checked basic things such as passwords and groups and everything looks okay there.

When logging in from pty I get the error "/home/user! not found" as soon as I enter the users correct password, and then get kicked out. When trying from ssh I get kicked out aswell with some standard error message. If I run su username as root, I get "Cannot execute /bin/bash: Permission denied".

I've also checked a few permissions on files, namely /etc/shadow, /etc/group and /etc/password. Everything okay there too. Also, when tailing /var/log/everything/current I get the following message while trying to log in via ssh:

Code:
Nov 11 08:51:15 [sshd] Accepted keyboard-interactive/pam for ludd from 192.168.2.6 port 33100 ssh2
Nov 11 08:51:15 [sshd(pam_unix)] session opened for user ludd by (uid=0)
Nov 11 08:51:15 [PAM-env] Unknown PAM_ITEM: <XAUTHORITY>
Nov 11 08:51:15 [sshd] PAM pam_putenv: delete non-existent entry; XAUTHORITY
Nov 11 08:51:15 [sshd] fatal: login_get_lastlog: Cannot find account for uid 1000

Right, so any pointers would be very appriciated. I'll try to reply with whatever information is needed ASAP. Thanks in advance!

seems you created the users in the wrong way
read this faq:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=49783&highlight=useradd

I think it's better to delete the users and recreate them, for a normal system a

useradd -g users -G wheel -s /bin/bash -m (username)

will be enough

Actually, no, that is how I created them. As I always have.

So and you actually checked if the home directory of the user really exists?

Yes. Directorys, and users exists. If I try and log in with the wrong password nothing happens, it just prompts me for another one. But if I type the correct one, I get kicked out.

Sort of feels like everything's set, but maybe some permissions or something is messed up? Wish I knew. :)

The same for me, when I use 'su username' the message is the same, but I guess it's more important: 'su - username' - Unable to cd to /home/username. Of course it's exist, and all the permissions are correct.

No, dont waste your time looking , this seems to be a bug in latest pam: pam-0.77-r1

I just retrograded to 0.77 and a new console login worked correctly.

Both root and user login at console works as before : no silly errors.

HTH

Sadly , startx is still fucked so I will have to find another borked update ....

I believe it is a bug that occured because of pam-0.77-r1. Many people have been experiencing similar login problems.
