according to the devs at the ATI Linux Chat on irc.gamesurge.net today, amd64 drivers will be out with the next driver release, which is currently set for december. rejoice!

i don't have a copy of their exact answer, but i promise i'm not lying!

here's a quote i actually did get. in response to a question about whether they're concerned that their sucky linux support hurts their rep:
<ATI_Linux_Guys> You bet that we are both very concerned about anything that impacts the reputation of our software
<ATI_Linux_Guys> as such we will now adopt a more open approach to keeping the user community update on our Linux developments, as we regularly update the press on our progress in the same manner we do with our windows drivers
<ATI_Linux_Guys> In fact you will see more coverage on ATI's linux developments in the coming weeks at some of your favorite tech web sites and we will continue this trend moving forward

also, no plans to integrate anything to or from the xorg drivers, and no PPC plans. and the PR guy vowed that "the same passion will go into our Linux drivers" that they put into their windows drivers. uh huh.

<edit>oh, and running several X sessions will eventually be supported, but they didn't give a time frame</edit>

I'll believe it when I see it. That is why I bought nVidia GeForce for now. At least the drivers work as they should.

Too little too late ATI... after being an ATI fan for many years, I just went for BFG 6800GT WITH 64bits drivers. It was hard to change, but I don't regret. Surely not while playing games with all settings max out 8)

I am just pissed off at the one(s) that said to ATI executives, no need to rush on 64 bits system... it's only for nerds - which is what I imagine happened.

If I don't play games under 64-bit Linux, nor do complex 3D graphics, why is it important to me to get these drivers?

So far I'm very happy with the drivers in XORG for my ATi card.

Sometimes even the xorg drivers feel a little bit slow in desktop use. And the CPU is quite high in some conditions.
With drivers we could have composite extension for example and accelerated 2d desktop.

So....I give a fuck if they will lunch the drivers or not. I'm SO FUCKED UP (sorry) of this Support that I sold my ATI and bought an nVidia 5900. And hey - If I can easily flash it to 5950Ultra what will give me more than 10% performance Boost. And hey - nVidia has superb drivers for a long time.

Even if ATI would send me my personal ATI-Driver-Programmer to my home - I will never buy there products again. It's simply 2 late. MUCH 2 late! I don't support a manufacturer that leaves the community like this...

The simple fact is that ATI does not make a significant effort in supporting Linux, and that's the kind way of putting it. They don't care, apparently, and so I've had to get rid of the ATI board that I had, and replace it with an Nvidia.

Vote with your dollars and eventually they will take notice.
