I would move over to 64-bit in a heartbeat if they released their drivers for AMD64 next month. I have a Emachines M6809. I've been thinking hard about it anyways, considering the poor performance & lack of support for xorg 6.8. I guess I should've done more research before buying my laptop. Oh well, hopefully I'll get support for 64-bit someday.

ATI has never cared much about drivers, be it windows or linux. With linux they only suck a little more.

Everybody who uses linux and buys a ATI card should be shot  .

Well, i love nvidia and always had nvidia before i get a mobile computer (see my sig at the bottom). When it comes to mobile and power management ATI is better for both performance and power management from what i know of. This mobile card (mobility 9700) still surprises me for both Linux native games (UT2k4 and ET are incredibly smooth) and windows (i kept a windows boot on laptop :s

Only issues i have are with winex/cedega porting windows games, and only with that. It looks more like winex/cedega/transgaming dev's are responsible for ATI issues, as far as i am concerned. So i just keep windows boot on laptop if i need to play a game that wouldnt work under linux.

Only in your dreams...

Get nVidia and you get everything and every game wokring out with outstanding speed. If may cost you some, but we all know that good and cheap doesn't exist.

I'm asking this question on behalf of a friend dumb enough to have bought a laptop with an ati card.
He uses the "ati" drivers from xorg 6.8.0 meaning (i think) he won't have any 3d accel. Will there be a big difference on dvd/movie viewing without it??

PS: Don't be dumb like my mate, buy NVidia :P

I've got an ATI RV350 [Radeon 9600], and currently suffering the issue of not allowed to move to xorg 6.8 (ati drivers problem). I don't like being under a vendor without commitment.

From this and other messages in the forum looks like nvidia has better support and commitment with the linux community.

I'm looking after the new GeForce 6600 GT AGP8X to run with my Pentium 4 and Linux 2.6.9 + hopefully xorg 6.8.

I've never had nvidia and would like to know if they are good, stable, drivers are updated regulary, etc etc

Thanks in advance

I don't suppose this is quite the answer you are looking for, but my first thought is: nvidia sure is a hell of a lot better on all of those fronts than ati when it comes to linux. As for whether or not they are good, I think that is fairly subjective, but they do release new linux drivers every 2-3 months. They also have previous experience going for them as far as amd64 is concerned (seeing as you mention a p4 I don't suppose this matters a whole lot to you).

Has anybody been brave anough to get this working? I looked at the page but it is to confusing for me what to patch and not or what is already included with Xorg-6.8! If there is a clearer instruction i am happy to try it out and hopefully NOT blow up my ati

and regarding P4, I'm seeing Intel getting behind in the 64 space, so I'm also considering going to AMD64 soon.

I've got another question about NVIDIA. I've seen several vendors implement their chips. Which one do you recommend?

Thanks again

I thought they did. :)

And we're only the first of December. Let's hope they finally release them on time this time.

I decided to move to 64-bit gentoo anyways. Working pretty nice so far. Hopefully ati will release 64-bit drivers soon.

I've seen crappy performance, no Xorg6.8, and promises. Why shouldn't I go for a competitor. Don't give me that stability>performance crap, nvidia has both already...

Yeah I'm about ready to grab myself an nvidia card off of ebay. If I don't have ati drivers come the new year it's over. I'll stick the card in my windows box (it runs reaaaally nicely in windows) and buy myself a nice nvidia card. Gah.

I'll also NEVER buy an ati card EVER again.

Cheers,
james

My old radeon absolutely dusts my new geforce in terms of performance and stability, because nvidia's old drivers for amd64 absolutely stank, and nvidia's new drivers for amd64 don't even compile on my system. At least for older radeons there is a decent open-source accelerated driver to fall back on.

Also, give 'em a few more days. It's only been a week.
