Hi
I'm struggling with a little problem. When I want to reboot the computer while using gnome 2 it actually log outs and ends up in the gdm greeter.
Is there anyway to really "shutdown" or "restart the computer"?
I've searched everywhere for this little problem
Thanx in advance |

I was having this same problem. It seems that gnome just runs /usr/bin/poweroff or /usr/bin/reboot as your user when you select shutdown or reboot respectively. I don't think that there is anything at those locations by default in gentoo so you'll need to put a couple of scripts there that enable a normal user to shutdown or reboot.
You could do this by symlinking /usr/bin/reboot to /sbin/halt and setting /sbin/halt setuid root. This is pobably a bad idea in terms of security and you should realy use sudo or some such program.
Why the designers insist on running reboot and halt as user I have no idea. You can just logout and then shutdown from the gdm menu anyway (which runs reboot as root) so it's no more secure.
anyway, hope that helps

Herbie is correct, i have changed the gnome-session setting defaults to not show the confusing dialog anymore. _________________ Gentoo Gnome Desktop team |
