Hi,
I have a Lexmark z35 printer, which worked fine on my old pentium3 gentoo system, using the official binary driver.
I installed the driver on my new amd64 gentoo system and, despite driver are for x86 system, the printer looks to be recognised:
Code:

tux started #  /usr/lib/cups/backend/z35

/usr/lib/cups/backend/z35: /usr/lib/gcc-lib/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.4/32/libstdc++.so.5: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/cups/backend/z35)
/usr/lib/cups/backend/z35: /usr/lib/gcc-lib/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.4/32/libstdc++.so.5: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/cups/backend/z35)
direct z35:/dev/usb/lp0 "Lexmark Inkjet color printer" "Lexmark Printer"

How you can see I receive errors about libstdc++.so.5
Code:

tux started # ld /usr/lib/gcc-lib/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.4/32/libstdc++.so.5.0.6
/usr/lib/gcc-lib/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.4/32/libstdc++.so.5.0.6: could not read symbols: File in wrong format

I also tried to print a test page:
Code:
 /usr/lib/cups/backend/z35 utilities
/usr/lib/cups/backend/z35: /usr/lib/gcc-lib/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.4/32/libstdc++.so.5: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/cups/backend/z35)
/usr/lib/cups/backend/z35: /usr/lib/gcc-lib/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.4/32/libstdc++.so.5: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/cups/backend/z35)
ioctl: Invalid argument
ERROR: Unable to open printer port "/usr/lib/cups/backend/z35": Text file busy

and when I lunch the previous command, dmesg says:
Code:
ioctl32(z35:21177): Unknown cmd fd(3) cmd(80085006){00} arg(ffffd378) on /dev/usb/lp0

Hoping in a reply, thanks,

Ps. yes, cupsd is started :)

If you can get it working I will be very surprised and very grateful. I tried it too, you see...

I think the problem is that Lexmark use a proprietary programme to do the actual communication with the printer, and so that's 32-bit. CUPS, however, is 64-bit, so the two don't understand each other.

I sent an email to the Lexmark Customer Support about my (and your, of course ) problem, asking also about a newer 64bit linux driver. Maybe, you can send an email, too

I will post the reply of the support center.

bye.

since lexmark drivers are x86 only, is it possible to use a 32bit cups installation and make the printer work?
it's only a suggestion
