When I try 'startx,' I get a black screen with an 'X' cursor in the middle that I am unable to move. When I grep /var/log/Xorg.0.log for errors and warnings, I get only the following warnings:

Code:

(WW) The directory "/usr/share/fonts/CID/" does not exist.
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory)
(WW) (1400x1050,Monitor0) mode clock 122MHz exceeds DDC maximum 110MHz
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Not using mode "1400x1050" (width 1400 is larger than
(WW) NVIDIA(0):      EDID-specified maximum 1280)
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Not using mode "700x525" (height 1050 is larger than
(WW) NVIDIA(0):      EDID-specified maximum 1024)
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Not using mode "1152x768":
(WW) NVIDIA(0):   horizontal sync start (1178) not a multiple of 8
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Not using mode "576x384":
(WW) NVIDIA(0):   horizontal sync start (589) not a multiple of 8
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Not using mode "360x200":
(WW) NVIDIA(0):   horizontal sync start (378) not a multiple of 8
(WW) NVIDIA(0): OpenGL is only supported in depths 16 and 24

The tail of the log, where I'm assuming things go wrong, looks like the following (no warnings):

Code:

(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Keyboard0" (type: KEYBOARD)
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Mouse0" (type: MOUSE)
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "NVIDIA Event Handler" (type: Other)
(--) Mouse0: PnP-detected protocol: "ExplorerPS/2"
(II) Mouse0: ps2EnableDataReporting: succeeded

And that's all I know. Hitting Ctrl+Alt+Backspace kills X, and I'm put back to my handy-dandy command line. With 'startxfce4,' on the other hand, I get the nice message:

Code:

/usr/bin/startxfce: X server already running on display :0.0
xsetroot: unable to open display ':0.0'

All of which seems a bit ironic when Xorg so insistantly refuses to do anything useful. As a side note, I recently emerged the nvidia-glx driver, and created Xorg.conf using xorg -config. I'd really appreciate any suggestions, as I have roughly no idea where to go from here.

I had the same problem when i upgraded to xorg 6.8. There are many threads on the forums about this problem and i think i read them all and could just never get it to work. So i went back to xorg 6.7 and all was fine again. You could try reading some of the other threads maybe that will help if you already havent. I am just gonna wait for a few more versions of xorg to try again :?:
