just tried to recompile my kernel to change some of the IDE interface settings because of DMA problems. now i'm running into a kernel panic at boot, and i'm unsure how to proceed:
Quote: | VFS: Cannot open root device "hda4" on unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) |
my grub statement is:
Code: | root (hd0,1) # windows XP partition is at (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,1)/vmlinuz ro root=/dev/hda4 video=vesafb:ywrap,pmipal,1024x768-32@85
initrd (hd0,1)/fbsplash-emergence-1024x768 |
kernel is 2.6.9-gentoo-r3 |

I had the same problem with 2.6.9-nitro2. I scrolled up in the messages, and found that it said "Unknown partition table" for both of my HDDs.
I couldn't investigate it much, I've upgraded to 2.6.9-nitro3 and the problem went away. |
