|
|
General problem:
I tried running nmap from my other comp on this comp, and it said no ports open. Then I tried nmapping the other comp from here, and again, no ports open. How do I open/close ports? (I guess I should read up on ports, eh?)
Specific problem:
my bittorrent (using bittornado) is slow. I configured my router (which I've done successfully back in the windows days) to forward the ports, and failing this, I even tried dmz for a bit, but still slow. (right now uploading ~25kB/s, download ~12kB/s). I got up to a 63kB/s on a different torrent yesterday. I have a 1.5Mbps DSL, so it seems like it should be a bit faster than 63kB even. Are some torrents this slow? I also set my ports in a different range to avoid any ISP blocking. Also, I have both comps running distcc with the distccd running, and though this is a separate problem, I noticed a different time they weren't swapping anything. Is that because they are different architectures, or is it the closed ports again?
It seems strange that it would say that all ports are closed since I can ssh into the other box...
Any ideas? |

Are you using the bittorando GUI?
If so, you should get an indication as to if your port-forwarding works correctly (a green light should appear).
If you see the green light, then it's just the torrent that is slow. Myswlf, I have 8Mbps ADSL (0.8 upload), and I usually get around 40kbps download rates, since my upload isn't very good, and other people get prioritized instead.
Then again, sometimes I have gotten 600kB/s transfers through bittorrent, and 800kB/s through FTP, so it's I know there's nothing wrong with it.
Note: The default nmap range won't spot bittorrent, and especially not bittornado, since it uses random ports. Try some of the advanced options in bittornado to see what port it listens to, and then try to nmap that specific port. Also try to disable iptables, and see if that helps. |

Yes, I'm using bittornado, and yes it is yellow.
I ran a
which shows the particular bittorrent port that is listening, so I know that's not a problem. It also shows the prots for the other 2 services running (distcc is listening for instance).
Sounds like I should be getting much better results from bittorrent, but I really want to know more about how to open these ports and have more control generally over my comps.
Any ideas? |
