2004/11/14 - Xfce 4.2 Release Candidate 1 is out
Today, the Xfce project is proud to announce the release of version 4.2-RC1 of its Desktop Environment and development framework. Xfce is designed for Unix platforms using the GTK+ toolkit, and follows the Freedesktop specifications. It can be downloaded from here.
Xfce is the first desktop environment to ship with an easy to use graphical installation wizard, which takes care of compiling and installing Xfce and contributed packages on your computer. See here for download links and instructions.
This first Release Candidate offers several new and awaited features in comparison with the previous 4.0 stable release, while continuing to be lightweight, including a brand new session manager, keyboard shortcut and desktop menu graphical editors, multihead support, "kiosk mode" support, a desktop menu plugin for the panel, CUPS and BSD-LPR printing support, and a new icon theme. Moreover, Xfce 4.2 provides "cutting edge" features, such as a compositing manager for xfwm4 (a manager for the new Xorg compositor extension, which brings true transparency to the Xfce desktop). Xfce is now available in more than 25 languages. A complete changelog is available on this page.
We hope that you will give this release a try. Please report any bugs or issues with this release on the Xfce bug tracker or on the Xfce development list.
It includes, among others, the following applications :
* Window manager (xfwm4) : the Xfce 4.2 window manager.
* Panel (xfce4-panel) : it provides easy-to-setup detachable menus and application launchers.
It is compatible with the numerous plug-ins provided by the Xfce Goodies Project,
including the popular taskbar plugin.
* Desktop manager (xfdesktop) : the desktop background and root window menu manager.
* Session manager (xfce4-session) : allows you to restore your desktop the way you left it.
* File manager (xffm) : a fast file manager, with double pane and integrated samba network browser.
* Utilities (xfce-utils) : provides the Xfce user guide, and, among other tools, xftaskbar4, a separate
taskbar that provides an intuitive way to manage windows.
* Application finder (xfce4-appfinder) : a new application, which allows you to search, launch,
and find information about applications installed on your system.
* Iconbox (xfce4-iconbox) : an icon box that can be used as an alternative to the taskbar.
* Settings manager (xfce-mcs-manager and xfce-mcs-plugins) : provides a centralized Multi-Channel
Settings manager and plugins, which allow instant application of modified settings.
* Print manager (xfprint) : the print dialog and manager.
Xfce 4.2-RC1 includes its own GTK2 theme engine and window manager themes, bringing homogeneity to both business and personal desktops.

| ebuilds exists, but everything in them is masked( and this is for us who like to belong to the "testing" catagory). As soon as i can figure out how to remove that restiction, i'm building it because the screenshots look awesome |

Saw it! I'm going to re-install my gentoo from stage1 once the xfce 4.2 is out! (Downloading the gentoo 2004.3 minimal iso  )

Only ones that I see are for 4.1.91 and RC1 is 4.1.99.1 and unfortunately I can't find the ebuilds. Are they in fluidportage or something?

Uh... why?
Unless you really enjoy the installation, or have managed to seriously screw up your current setup then there is no reason to do anything besides

I never had such short startup-times.

hehe, I've been planning to give my gentoo a totally fresh installation from stage1. I've learnt lots of things since this most recent installation (stage1 too. serveral months ago). I would like to put them all together at one time:)
Sometimes I can't keep myself from feeling that my system is a little bit "dirty" after using it for a long time, is this a bad habit that windows had "infected" me? 
Well, I've always been a gnome fan (E fan too! But still waiting for E17...) I really like gtk's simple look & feel style. However, sometimes I feel gnome is really big, mozilla & epiphany eat up my compile time and disk space, but I use firefox and don't use them at all... I've been thinking about:
1. switch to gnome-light cleanly
2. give the new version of xfce4 a try, it looks really great!
3. switch my whole system from ext3 to reiserFS
4. resize my disk partitions to fit my needs better...
ummm, is there an easier way to accomplish these goals without a fresh installation?
Any suggestion would be welcome

That is only up to Beta2 (I.e. 4.1.91). This is RC1 we're talking about. RC1 is 4.1.99.1  It is not in portage.
It is not on gentoo-portage.com yet too.

here you go. Used it for some time, since i´m on cvs. But i assume it´s the same as the new 4.2.
XFCE4.2-rc1
Anyway, i don´t know what should have optically changed from 4.1.9 to 4.2. XFCE got a new module to handle transset & xcompmgr with ease, but i refuse to use xcompmgr since it causes instability on nvidia-systems (especially on mine), so there is no real transparency in my shots.
Most updates aren´t visible, such as the perfect Session manager or the completed Settings manager.

Fluidportage? If you're talking about FP, the CVS ebuilds, they're in there; I've been using them for a while and now that RC1 is out, I'll probably switch to that, mostly for updating simplicity; CVS has been near-stable for quite a while now.
