|
|
Ok, 1st off im not having this problem on my gentoo box Im having it on a Suse box at work. But the suse community forums are shite and I cant get any help there, so I thought that Id call out for help here. As the title states I cant play audio cds on this machine. I dont know what the hell is the matter. fstab:
Code: |
/dev/cdrom /media/cdrom subfs ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0
#/dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0
|
With either of the above entries I get nada. Im able to read data files from a cd w/out a problem. (I.e from a solaris install disk) But when I try to play an audio cd nothing?!?!?! The symlink is there for /dev/hdc to /dev/cdrom: Code: | ls -l /dev/cdrom
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2004-10-29 22:27 /dev/cdrom -> hdc
|
Im not getting anywhere with this so any help would be appreciated. _________________ The realOTW: http://forums.realotw.org/index.php

I don't think the problem would be with the symlinks. I would check that cd audio is not muted in your sound system. I do that via alsaconfig for ALSA, I don't know about OSS. After that, be sure that the audio cable (not just the ide and power cables) is connected from the cd drive to the sound card (or motherboard if it's onboard).
I've made the assumption that whatever tool you're playing cd's in seems to play them but you just don't hear anything. Is this true? Do you have any indication that your app is playing or not playing the cd? |

Actually its not that I dont hear them, its that they arent read I guess is a better way of putting it. (I.e I insert cd, then try to add songs from cd to say xmms but the /media/cdrom dir shows empty) (I am able to listen to mp3's and such so its not the connections to the speaker or similiar) Does my fstab entry look ok? _________________ The realOTW: http://forums.realotw.org/index.php

Ok, that's a good clarification. I'm not sure about subfs options, so someone else needs to verify that. Before I go further let me say that I don't frequently play audio cd's, so I could be completely wrong here...
I don't think it's possible to mount a raw audio cd, because there isn't a filesystem on it. I tried to mount one manually, and mount complained about not being able to read the superblock, which makes sense to me. So I think the issue isn't about mounting and reading the cd, it's about how to tell xmms to play an audio cd.
One google search later....
Aha, we have to configure audio playback in xmms. Once I set my device and dir correctly from the cd audio player input plugin (in audio i/o plugins under the prefs panel), I can go 'add file' in xmms and xmms shows that directory as having a bunch of cd audio tracks. This site has a bunch of screenies showing some dialogs, tho they're slightly different from mine.

So just to clarify, I did NOT need to mount the cd. Once configured, xmms saw the cd w/o issue. |

you could try gxine or
Code: | gnome-cd --device=/dev/cdroms/cdrom1 --play |
or maybe
Code: | gnome-cd --device=/dev/cdrom --play | in your case.
gxine plays pcm the second goes down the little bit if wire.

Ok, got this figured out. Apparently libcdread is now part of libcdaudio and there were some options that I had to toggle. Im now able to rip / play / whatever. Thx guys for all ur help. Just goes to show you that the gentoo comm. kicks fscking ass as theyre willing to help a fellow member out even when hes using a different distro! Thanks again! _________________ The realOTW: http://forums.realotw.org/index.php
