I'm running Gentoo 2004.2 on a AMD 900Mhz, 384MB RAM @ 100Mhz, GF2MX400, 40GB HDD, .. etc with kernel 2.4.26-gentoo-r9.

Gentoo run's great and how it schould be .. but some time's the whole system block's .. I can't do a thing anymore. It doesn't hapen a lot, but when it happens the 'num lock' led on my keyboard goed out and 'caps lock' & 'scroll lock' starts to flikker (pink .. goed on and out .. I don't know the word in English). That is probably a message? I searched on google .. forum's .. but didn't find a thing about this.
Now, it mostaly happens when i close a program (glxgears, gftp, ..) or a game (UnrealTournament or Savage).
The reason why I'm posting this here is that I don't know where to begin to soulve this problem. I ran SuSE 8.0 and some older versions of Gentoo on this pc .. and I never had this problem. And since then .. nothing changed in my hardware (didn't replace anything).
I searched in some log's (like the xorg, fluxbox, .. log's) but didn't find a thing.

Hope someone can help me with this ..
Thanks in advanced!

Sounds like you might have a kernel panic.

Preventing one, if you have one, can be anything from a recompile of your kernel to fixing some cryptic configuration file.

Aha .. good to know. How can I figure that out? And how can I find the reason of that kernel panic?
I searched in /var/log/genkernel.log for 'panic'
Code:
linkmark@linkmark swat $ grep -i panic /var/log/genkernel.log
Generate a panic event to all BMCs on a panic (CONFIG_IPMI_PANIC_EVENT) [N/y/?]
/usr/src/linux-2.4.26-gentoo-r9/scripts/mkdep -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux-2.4.26-gentoo-r9/include -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -Wno-trigraphs -O2 -fno-strict-aliasing -fno-common -pipe -mpreferred-stack-boundary=2 -march=i586  -nostdinc -iwithprefix include -- acct.c capability.c context.c dma.c exec_domain.c exit.c fork.c info.c itimer.c kmod.c ksyms.c module.c panic.c pm.c printk.c ptrace.c resource.c sched.c signal.c softirq.c sys.c sysctl.c time.c timer.c uid16.c user.c > .depend
gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux-2.4.26-gentoo-r9/include -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -Wno-trigraphs -O2 -fno-strict-aliasing -fno-common -pipe -mpreferred-stack-boundary=2 -march=i586   -nostdinc -iwithprefix include -DKBUILD_BASENAME=panic  -c -o panic.o panic.c
ld -m elf_i386 -e stext  -r -o kernel.o sched.o dma.o fork.o exec_domain.o panic.o printk.o module.o exit.o itimer.o info.o time.o softirq.o resource.o sysctl.o acct.o capability.o ptrace.o timer.o user.o signal.o sys.o kmod.o context.o uid16.o ksyms.o pm.o

I can recompile my kernel, but how will I know my problem will be soulved?
I realy don't know where to begin ..

thx !
