I am running a new installation of Gentoo minimal live cd x86. I have redone everything from scratch so far. I get as far as downloading the latest tarball (stage1-x86-2004.3.tar.bz2). I am getting an error when I start to extract the file using the tar command (tar -xvjpf stage1-x86-2004.3.tar.bz2). The error is as follows:

./usr/i386-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/3.3/cpp
tar: ./usr/i386-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/3.3/cpp: Wrote only 2560 of 4096 bytes
tar: Skipping to next header
tar: Archive contains obsolescents base-64 headers
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
livecd root #

I downloaded the stage1 tarball from several sites and I keep getting the same error (obviously because they are mirrored). Has anyone else had this problem or better yet, does anyone know how to fix it?

Thanks in advance...

Hey, exton PA...close to home. I'm in Narberth.

Anyway, I'm not sure what's going on. Just a shot in the dark, did you delete the tarball before re-downloading it? Also, since you're this early in the install process, is it possible your partition didn't format cleanly? If you are at this stage it might not hurt to try formatting it again. If those two things don't work, I'm not too sure what else to tell you. Maybe you can run it with
Code:
script output-file tar -bzvf ...yadda yadda
and print out the contents of output-file here.

Good luck,

Dave

P.S. Come check out phillylinux.org some time...the meetings are pretty good.
