So, I decided to try the gnome volume manager stuff. I emerged udev/hal/ etc. After a few hours of frustration, I came to the conclusion that it wasn't worth it to me. So, I uninstalled udev and hal.

Now I have discovered that my printer no longer works. Its a HP OfficeJet 6110xi. It uses hpoj. When hpoj starts, or when I run ptal-init setup, I see this:

Code:

ptal-mlcd: ERROR at ExMgr.cpp:4063, dev=<mlc:usb:OfficeJet_6100_Series@/dev/lp0>, pid=7515, e=22, t=1100647574
libusbFindDevice: Couldn't find device!

ptal-mlcd: ERROR at ExMgr.cpp:4315, dev=<mlc:usb:OfficeJet_6100_Series@/dev/lp0>, pid=7515, e=22, t=1100647574
llioGetDeviceID failed!

ptal-mlcd: ERROR at ExMgr.cpp:2525, dev=<mlc:usb:OfficeJet_6100_Series>, pid=7515, e=22, t=1100647574
Couldn't find device!

I'm not sure what to do. ptal-init setup does not see any devices.

Is there something that udev has done that I can undo?

I don't have a soln, but this might give a lead. My system uses
`udev' and the printer appears at "/dev/usb/lp0".

The cited code in your message suggests that you too have a USB
printer. If yes, try looking at "/dev/" after you turn-on the
printer. Do you see a directory and file being created,
Code:

/dev/usb/lp0

? Your message showed "/dev/lp0" as the expected device, so maybe
there is a mis-match of device names? If all of my wild guesses
are correct, then a stop-gap might be to symlink
Code:

/dev/lp0 -> /dev/usb/lp0

and then re-post for a correct fix.
