hi all, kinda late so sorry if i dont make sense...

i have gaim installed, sound works fine on it... when i run gaim verbose, i can see that its using OSS....

i installed xmms and mplayer, however i get no sound. options on xmms shows the output is set to alsa... there are no other output plugins (besides diskwriter, but i dont think that matters). sure, i hear that alsa is better than oss, but i dont care, i just want some sound. anywys, i fire up my other comp, and see that xmms has OSS Driver 1.2.10 libOSS.so as the output plugin... and it works fine...

all i did on both boxes was emerge xmms... but only one box seems to have the xmms oss plugin. so my question is, how do i get the oss plugin for xmms (and mplayer?)

many thanks

Have oss in you USE flags when you emerge them.

do you have oss specified in your USE flag? You can add oss to the USE flag in /etc/make.conf
You'd have to compile xmms again, but thats done in a minute.

I like OSS emulation over ALSA BTW. ALSA seems sloppier, OSS emulation seems less hard on my hardware. So go and compile with oss support.

BTW, use -v option in emerge to see USE options:
Code:

bash-2.05b$ sudo emerge -av xmms

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild   R   ] media-sound/xmms-1.2.10-r5  -3dnow +alsa -cjk -debug -directfb +esd -ipv6 +mikmod -mmx +nls +oggvorbis +opengl +oss +xml 0 kB

Total size of downloads: 0 kB

Do you want me to merge these packages? [Yes/No]

You see? I've got +oss there, you have that?

good luck![/code]
