I am trying, with some success, to get postfix running. I realized that I wasnt receiving system messages and decided to do something about it. I have some questions:
1) I dont have a /var/log/messages on my computer. Shouldnt it exist?
2) I can send a message by doing "cat testfile | sendmail darren" and I find the message in .maildir/new. I added a .forward file to send it to my regular email address, but that fails. While that email got bounced, this one was successfully delivered (I changed some of the information, not knowing what was acceptable to post):

3) Do I need both a Mail folder and a .maildir?
4) Where can I change my $MAIL environment variable? I checked the usual places: /etc/profile, ~/.bashrc, but didnt find where it was being set. It is set to /var/mail/darren, but that folder doesnt exist. (Both /var/mail and /var/spool/mail are empty.)
