DVD(+R) only as root, CDs not even that

That's kind of a weird problem, isn't it?

I can burn DVDs (i've tried with +Rs) as root only, but no CDs, even as root.

I'm running gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.9-r4, with ATAPI-mode writing, using cdrecord and xcdroast.

I've tried all the modes (DAO, TAO, ...), but to no avail. I have tried many different approaches, but none yielded results. It's really annoying I can't burn CDs at all.

The error is always the same: at 99%, it says "Fixating ...", the cdrecord terminates and says "Error writing tracks". Even if I write multisession.

I made all the `chmod -s`'s, no change.
dmesg doesn't say anything fishy at all about my writer (/dev/hdc). Something that I do find strange, though, is that eventhough `hdparm /dev/hdc` says DMA is enabled, cdrecord ALWAYS complains "There is absolutely no DMA present". Why is that?

But, generally, I would just like to be able to burn CDs normally ... being able to burn as root would quite do at the moment, though.
