It happened again. About once or twice a year I log onto my root account only to find out the .bash_history file has been deleted and reallocated. I don't mind losing the history so bad as the fact it's spooking me: do I have an unwanted visitor? Or not? I can't thik of anything else that would delete root's .bash_history file except...

It would be smarter to edit it rather than delete it, and....

I'm really quite careful about security.

Can anyone think of some other cause for my mysteriously disappearing history file?

I'm pretty sure the .bash_history auto reallocates itself after a certain period of time because the file becomes too big besides I doubt any intruder would use bash they'd probably use another smaller shell.
Quote:

HISTFILESIZE
HISTFILESIZE defines the maximum number of commands ~/.bash_history,
or whatever value you assign to HISTFILE, can hold. If it is defined as 2, then only
the last 2 commands run will be logged to ~/.bash_history. The value of
HISTFILE can grow pretty big if left unattended. This variable will ensure that it
is kept to a specific size. The default value for it is 500. If you decide to have your
commands logged to HISTFILE, you may want to specify a smaller value than 500.
