Hi,

We have an alcatel speedtouch modem from the 500 series. Is this a router too?

If it is, I want to swap the router we have, which is connected with the alcatel adsl modem, for a switch. But will I be able to have file/printer sharing too then?

Thnx,

Ruben

Hey,

Yip it seems that that the products in the 500 series are routers aswell but to be sure do you have the model number please?

We can then check the specs on http://www.speedtouchdsl.com/homeprod_dsl.htm

(Thomson has now taken over the Speedtouch products from Alcatel)

Thanks!

Richard :)

Hi,

The installation guide says its an alcatel speedtouch 510 but it has also something to do with thomson. :?: So is this a router too or not I don't get it :?

But the main question was: What do I need to split the single utp port from the modem/router into 4 or more ports? Is that called a switch or a hub? And if I swap the 2nd router for a switch/hub, will I still be able to use filesharing etc. on the network?

Thnx for ur help,

Ruben

Hey,

Your modem is probably branded Alcatel on itself, but since Thomson now handles the SpeedTouch products the manual could be branded Thomson but it doesn't make a difference.

Yip well this page http://www.speedtouchdsl.com/prod510.htm calls it a "ADSL residential gateway" which AFAIK means it will do NAT (network address translation) to share your DSL connection to your network so yes it is a router in that sense.

Ok next (according to this) it seems that the 510 comes in two variants:

with one 10/100Base-T ethernet port
OR
with a four port 10/100Base-T ethernet switch built in.

From what you said it looks like you got the first one (1 x ethernet port).

So yes you would need to connect your modem to either a hub or switch in order to have more ethernet ports for your computers to connect to.

Your network would then look something like this:

Code:
{the internet}
        |
        |_____[adsl modem gateway]
                       |
                       |__________<hub or switch>
                                  |   |    |    |
                                  |   |    |    |
                                (pc1)(pc2)(pc3)(pc4)

The difference between a hub and a switch? "[a hub] provides bandwidth which is shared among all the objects, compared to switches, which provide a dedicated connection between individual nodes" - Wikipedia- Hub

So a switch would be a much better choice than a hub (although a hub would also work). And the price difference between hubs and switches these days is tiny so I highly recommend you get a switch instead of a hub.

Once you have a switch/hub it's just a matter of connecting the modem to the switch/hub using a LAN cable (i think you should be able to use a straight through cable because the modem has a MDI-X port (according to the manual) but I stand to be corrected on this as I'm not 100% sure). Then connect all the other PCs to the hub/switch and configure the modem to share the connection and then the PCs to use the modem as their default gateway.

I hope this helps!

Kind Regards,

Richard :)

Hi,

I already got the perfect solution, just make the alcatel only an adsl modem, so u can have the wireless router behind it too. So disable the NAT capacities of the alcatel.

For later readers:

This is called dhcp spoofing, you need a file which you can download at many places (search the net for alcatel speedtouch 510 dhcp spoofing) and upload it to the modem. (go to http://10.0.0.138) Advanced>Setup>Browse the download .ini file and then upload. (more info about this all on the web) Now your alcatel turns into only a modem and so u need a router/server with NAT capacities behind the alcatel (if you want internet to work :P)

Thnx anyways,

Ruben
