|
|
i have been running 2.6.9-gentoo-r4 for a few days now and the system has been working flawlessly. somehow it got BORKED today so that it can no longer boot. i booted from an older kernel, re-emerged the 2.6.9 source code, and recompiled/reinstalled a new kernel. still no boot.
everything had been going fine until..
today i popped a Knoppix 3.4 Live CD into my PC and booted Knoppix to take a peek at how Knoppix creates the xorg.conf file. i used Knoppix to BROWSE the hard disks, but I did not do any writing. i shut down Knoppix and rebooted Gentoo.
much to my surprise, Gentoo will not boot! while going through the boot cycle, Gentoo stops here:
Code: | ReiserFS: hda4: Found reiser format "3.6" with standard journal
ReiserFS: hda4: using ordered data mode
ReiserFS: hda4: journal params: device hda4, size 8192, journal first block 18, max trans len 1024, max batch 900, max commit age 30, max trans age 30
ReiserFS: hda4: checking transaction log (hda4)
ReiserFS: hda4: using r5 hash to sort names
VFS: Mounted root (reiserfs filesystem) readonly.
Freeing unused kernel memory: 220k freed

the next step in the boot cycle is supposed to be something like this: Code: |
INIT: version 2.85 booting |
unfortunately, 2.6.9 just hangs after attempting to free unused kernel memory.
luckily, i kept an old 2.6.7-gentoo-r11 kernel around, and i was able to use it to boot. i re-emerged gentoo-dev-sources, and re-compiled 2.6.9-gentoo-r4 using my same .config files. but 2.6.9 will not boot. even with a new kernel, it stops right where it did before.
what's wrong? |

In my case it was a hardware issue, but as dumb as this sounds, using instead of when I compiled my kernel made the problem go away. It sounds like your problem is a bit deeper, but maybe that will help. _________________ "Subtraction: Addition's tricky pal." --David Letterman
