|
|
I just wondered, if anybody at all is using coda on a gentoo system.
There is a new version 6.0.7. from 21st October, but when searching the forum for "coda", not really much is found.
It seems to be pretty complicated to setup, and the official docs on the coda website are horribly outdated.
Is there any install guide for the actual version available somewhere?
It's just, that in the kernel-setup network-filesystem section it is mentioned in the NFS comments: Code: | A superior but less widely used alternative to NFS is provided by the Coda file system; see "Coda file system support" below. |
If it's superior, there has to be a reason, why not much is to read about it, and why there is no Gentoo howto for it. _________________ Las torturas mentales de la CIA |

I am curious about Coda myself, Master One did you learn anything? If you have been successful in setting up coda, what do you think of it versus NFS?
Thanks. |

Nothing found out, and did not do any experiments by myself. As I don't find the time, and as it looks pretty complicated compared to NFS or SMB, I think I'll stick with those two for the time being. _________________ Las torturas mentales de la CIA |

Coda provides support for disconnected operation (e.g. for laptops), read/write server replication, security model for authentication and encryption, continued operation during partial network failures, persistent client caches and write back caching. It is supposed to be very scalable, and adaptable to network bandwidth conditions.
Coda only works over UDP as far as I know. The reason I don't use it is that it doesn't do block-based access like NFS does, which can increase overhead in low-bandwidth environments.
That, and the installation is much more complex than with nfs, especially if just want to do file-sharing over a couple of mounts.
