I have the same problem on a simple old testmachine I have been trying to install gentoo on.
It seems something goes wrong on
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libbitmap.a

I cannot find any compile errors or other X configuration mistakes yet...
No clue ;)

I'm getting startup failure at libbitmap.a as well, but a different error message:
Code:
(II) LoadModule: "bitmap"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libbitmap.a
Duplicate symbol __i686.get_pc_thunk.bx in usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libbitmap.a:bitmapmod.o
Also defined in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libbitmap.a

Fatal server error:
Module load failure

I found it!!

The problem arizes when you compile xorg with +hardened. The loader that xorg uses to load modules (elfloader) is incompatible with hardening.

solution: USE='-hardened' emerge xorg-x11
