I updated my alsa to alsa-driver-1.0.6a and now my sound doesn't work.

When i try to re-emerge alsa-driver I get the following error and it doesn't compile.
Quote:
...
checking for which soundcards to compile driver for... configure: error: Unsupported soundcard intel8x0

!!! ERROR: media-sound/alsa-driver-1.0.6a failed.
!!! Function econf, Line 449, Exitcode 1
!!! econf failed
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.

When I went to the alsa website, it said that intel8x0 was still supported. What gives.
I have the following line in make.conf
Quote:
ALSA_CARDS="intel8x0"

The error has a Bug Report.

Just a thought ... take a look at the Gentoo Alsa Guide and scroll down to "3" and check everything from there. The update may have muted things in the process.

I once made the mistake of not looking at Kmix (if you have KDE) or amixer carefully enough and found that one setting was at "0", therefore no sound.

When I type amixer, I get
Quote:
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such device

I can't emerge alsa-mixer so item 3 in the alsa guide is moot becaseu I can't get past step 1 :)

Are you running a 2.6 kernel? If so alsa-drivers is redundant, alsa is in the kernel now, it could be a reason to update to 2.6

I don't get any sound..... ever.

I'm still on the 2.4 kernel, but I'm starting to think the 2.6 kernel would be better. I would like to get this working though. Any ideas?

I am getting the same errors as sidkdbl07. I just upgraded to kernel 2.6 from 2.4

Now I have no sound. I just tried to emerge alsa to correct this problem, but stilll having the same results. I will unmerge alsa and try again.

I have tried viewing several posts so far with no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same internal sound chip. Sounds played fine when I logged in yesterday but then my sound went mute. I get no sound no matter what I make the mixer settings. I unmerged and re-emerged everything and upgraded my kernel. Upon reboot, just after the alsa modules load, my "mute" button on my laptop lights up and it won't turn off...

I had the same problem and error with my Intel8x0 sound card. For me, the solution was emerging alsa-lib, alsa-driver, and alsa-firmware (mainly just to make sure I had them, but then it detected my soundcard).

Oh, and I just finished upgrading to 2.6.9-r6

I ended up deleting everthing in /proc/asound/* and then recompiling and installing the asla modules...
