install gentoo with a wireless internet connection

I have already used the search engine of the forum, but I haven't really found what I looked for.

Is it possible to install Gentoo with a wireless internet connection (intel pro 2200BG).

Which iso do i have to download? Where can i find a tutorial or howto.

Not sure if you can do that with the gentoo livecd. Best bet is using knoppix to boot the computer and doing the install from there. That's assuming knoppix has drivers for wireless cards, and will autodetect them along with the other hardware. havn't tried it, personally, but I think it does. There's a guide somewheres on the forums on doing a gentoo install with knoppix, I think. Maybe in the howto's section.

It amazes me a little that our livecd can't autodetect wireless cards yet, I mean there are drivers for it, right?
This would bring Gentoo a lot closer to Laptops

I've noticed that one of the kernels does detect my wireless card when probing for hardware, I think it was the smp kernel (2.6). It finds my ipw2100 wireless card but the live cds do not have the drivers needed since they are not in the kernel by default. I believe the only way to do this would be to make your own livecd and to grab the drivers from http://ipw2200.sf.net. You could try out the http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_build_a_LiveCD howto. I don't have any experience with this so I don't know how difficult it is.

I recently did an install over wireless. I had to use the 2.4 kernel on the 2004.2 cd to get the linux-wlan-ng drivers for my prism2_usb adapter. I want to do a new install on a Dell 600m next, but I would need 2200 drivers. You could check out jintoo.

It will let you do a live emerge of the wireless drivers (of course you would have to be plugged in for that).

I installed gentoo with knippix. I had no problems at all doing this. There are a few extra steps if anyone is interested:

1. To setup wireless click the kde menu->networking-> and follow instructions
2. Open a terminal and type "sudo su"
3. Then "xhost +"

Then it's just a matter of using the fantastic Gentoo Handbook, which you can open with a gui browser in knoppix.

It was nice to be able to surf the web for answers to problems when I ran into them. I'd highly recommend a knoppix install for linux newbies like me who insist on trying Gentoo. :lol:
